Smart Certification

  /  Smart Certification

Dr. Kaur and Dr. Petersen are SMART Certified!

The Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) was developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) for reducing the potential negative health risks associated with the removal of existing dental mercury amalgam fillings. The SMART Certification serves to assist in reducing mercury exposure to patients and dental professionals.

Through the SMART Certification, Dr. Kaur and Dr. Petersen completed coursework related to mercury and the safe removal of amalgam fillings. The SMART Certification training program included two modules of scientific readings, online learning videos, examinations, the application of rigorous safety measures and the utilization of specific equipment.

The entire TKDDS Team has been trained by Dr. Kaur and Dr. Petersen in the SMART recommendations and we are qualified and ready to support you in safe mercury amalgam removal.

IAOMT SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Filling Removal Technique) Protocols
Patient Protection

Slurry of charcoal or chlorella for patient to rinse and swallow before procedure
– Binds heavy metals (mercury)

Full body, impermeable barrier
Protection from aerosols and particulates

Full head/face and neck barrier under and around rubber dam
– Protection from aerosols and particulates

External oxygen via nasal mask
– Protection from inhalation of mercury vapor
– Supports immune system

Non-latex rubber dam properly placed and sealed
– Physical barrier to protect against swallowing or ingesting amalgam filling debris

Mercury vapor vacuum placed in close proximity to patient mouth
– Assists in mercury vapor removal

Copious amounts of water to reduce heat
– Assists in reduction of mercury vapor released from fillings

High speed evacuation
– Assists in mercury vapor, aerosol and particulate removal

Section mercury amalgam filling into “chunks”
– Decreases mercury vapor release from filling

Post procedure thorough rinse and swallow slurry of charcoal or chlorella
– Binds heavy metals (mercury) for elimination

Dentist/Assistant Protection

Protective gowns
– Protection from mercury aerosols, particulates and vapor

Non-latex gloves
– Protection from mercury aerosols, particulates and vapor

Face shields and hair/head coverings
– Protection from mercury aerosols, particulates and vapor

Respiratory grade mask- positive pressure
– Protection from mercury aerosols, particulates and vapor

Office and Environment

Amalgam separator
– Separates mercury amalgam out of wastewater for proper disposal

High volume air filtration system
– Removes mercury vapor, aerosols and particulates from ambient office airr

Compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
– Addresses the proper handling, cleaning and disposal of mercury-contaminated components, clothing, equipment, room surfaces in the dental office

SPECIAL ATTENTION:  drink copious amounts of water, take appropriate supplements, and eat a diet high in fiber to aid in maintaining open detoxification pathways before and after the dental appointment.

DO NOT TAKE ANY ORAL VITAMIN C 48 hours prior to your dental appointments. Vitamin C has the ability to drastically reduce the effectiveness of dental local anesthetics (novocaine) making it necessary to use more, or to wait extra time before it becomes effective. If desired, oral vitamin C can be taken after the dental visit is completed, this will help dissipate the anesthetic, enabling it to wear off faster.
