Xylitol

  /  Xylitol

Xylitol is a non-fermentable natural sugar alcohol which is beneficial for dental health by reducing the function of cavity causing bacteria . Xylitol is a natural alternative to fluoride and can be found in many dental products including toothpaste, mouth rinse, gum, and mints. Xylitol is advertised as being “safe for consumption by diabetics and individuals with hypoglycemia.” However, it is advised to consult with your physician before using xylitol if you have these health conditions.

Two raw sources of Xylitol
Corn

More sustainable source
– Xylitol from corn is obtained through the cob itself which is otherwise “thrown away” after the kernels are harvested
– Corn grows very quickly and is therefore a more renewable and sustainable than birch

Corn allergy/sensitivity/intolerance
– The complex extraction process of xylitol from corn leaves no detectable protein to provide an allergen
– If you have a corn allergy/sensitivity/intolerance, we recommend you consult with your physician before using a corn-based xylitol dental product.

Watch out for GMO sourced corn
– Be sure packaging indicates it is non-GMO xylitol from non-GMO corn

Less expensive than birch derived xylitol

Birch Tree Sap

Less sustainable source
– While birch trees can be replanted, it takes several years for the trees to mature

Birch allergy/sensitivity/intolerance
– If you have an allergy/sensitivity/intolerance to birch, we recommend you consult with your physician before using a birch-based xylitol dental product

More expensive than corn derived xylitol

There are two grades of xylitol, Food Grade and Pharmaceutical (Nutriceutical) Grade. The Food Grade xylitol products are not as refined as the Pharmaceutical (Nutriceutical) Grade and therefore may contain some contaminates.
